The La Porte Sustainability Commission received an update on public electric‑vehicle charging: staff said quotes from ChargePoint would upgrade four existing chargers and that the city has pricing to add four more at tentative locations.
Staff said three of the current chargers would likely remain at the Civic, the Plaza and Kessler Park; one unit at the Lake Street Water Department is proposed to move to the library. Tentative sites for the four additional chargers are the Monroe parking area (farmers market), Unity Park (Wanatah Park), Stone Lake Beach and Newport Landing (Clear Lake trailhead or Chessie Trail parking).
Why it matters: Expanding public charging supports tourism, trails and local commerce, and responding to charger outages was described as a current morale and service issue; staff said several of the existing four units are in varying states of repair.
Commissioners discussed whether to pursue an ordinance requiring EV‑ready infrastructure for new developments (based on parking counts or building size). Staff said any such change would move through the planning commission and would be reviewed by the city attorney; they also suggested the topic could be incorporated into the comprehensive plan work.
Next steps: Staff will continue to pursue comparative pricing and partners (Drive Clean Indiana and others were contacted), consult the city attorney about possible ordinance language and bring a fuller update at the next meeting.
