Beech Grove athletics director reports rising participation, new sports and sponsorship plans

Mr. Daniel, the district athletic director, told the Beech Grove City Schools board that athletic participation has been rising and outlined plans to improve facilities and community engagement. He said the high school now has more than 300 student athletes about a third of the buildingand that many students are multi-sport participants.

The presentation emphasized athletics as developmental: "Sports to me is a great way to develop as a person," Mr. Daniel said, adding that the program focuses on teamwork, leadership and lifelong skills rather than a win-at-all-costs approach. He described a three-phase branding plan for athletic spaces, including updated lobby displays, plaques for team recognition and new signage in the auxiliary gym and pool area.

Mr. Daniel reviewed the district's sportsmanship scoring, which starts teams at a base score and deducts points for ejections (player ejections cost five points; coach or parent ejections cost 10). He said the district was recently honored for sportsmanship and aims to meet full banner criteria this fall. The athletics program also added girls wrestling and boys volleyball in recent years and fielded a 32-player flag-football roster this season; the director noted state-level success from individual athletes.

To fund facility and scoreboard upgrades, Mr. Daniel said the district is pursuing sponsorships and a partnership with Schoolboard Nation (a sponsorship platform), and has begun conversations with local and county partners. Board members encouraged Mr. Daniel to introduce coaches to the board so members can meet program staff and better understand program needs.

The board did not take any formal action on athletics during the meeting; the presentation concluded with applause and recognition for staff work.
