The chair told members the SOP distributed in advance contains updated language clarifying the board’s role: “it states that the fire merit commission has no authority to draft, amend, rescend, revise, or interpret any SOPs,” and that adoption would make the currently circulated SOPs “current and controlling SOPs of the St. John Fire Department.”
Board members had been given copies of the promotional SOP and an amended motion was offered to expand the adoption to all department SOPs rather than only the promotional procedure. The chair said members have access to the revised documents and asked for a motion to accept the SOPs as the board’s governing operating procedures. After the amendment to adopt all SOPs, the motion received vocal assent and the chair recorded the motion as approved.
The board did not record a roll-call vote in the transcript; vocal assent was noted with multiple members responding “I.” The meeting also approved minutes from March 26, 2026. The chair announced the next meeting is scheduled for May 21 at 5 p.m. and reported there were no public comments.
