Hopkins board honors All‑State musicians; student urges more support for music programs

The Hopkins Public School District board recognized students selected to the Minnesota Music Educators Association All‑State ensembles during its Sept. 24 meeting.

Superintendent Dr. Mary Peri Reid introduced the honorees, noted the All‑State program’s role in developing music learning across Minnesota and thanked teachers Melissa Hansen, Nora Tycast and Ally Swiggum for mentoring students. Dr. Reid said 628 young musicians across the state were selected for All‑State after a rigorous audition process and encouraged the community to attend the Feb. 14 All‑State concert at Orchestra Hall.

Sophia, one of the students recognized, told the board the All‑State experience taught students “more than music theory — we learned who we are as people,” and said music helped many students regain social connection after the pandemic. “It’s been special…music classes are some of our favorite parts of the day,” she said.

Board members and staff applauded the students and invited the audience to upcoming performances, including a choir concert on Oct. 10 and additional concerts in December and spring. The district noted teachers and families who supported students’ participation and encouraged attendance at school performances.

The recognition occupied the opening portion of the meeting and was followed by the regular board agenda.

The boardroom presentation included a public acknowledgment of teachers and a brief student testimonial that framed music programming as a contributor to student wellbeing and school community.
