Presenter outlines “secure” action in Surry County Schools’ emergency plan

According to the presenter, secure is called for hazards such as violence or criminal activity in the neighborhood or a dangerous animal on the playground. Teachers and staff are instructed to close and lock classroom or area doors and account for students and adults in the room. Where possible, classroom activities will continue uninterrupted; classes held outside should return to the building and continue inside if feasible.
The presenter explained that some departures — for example, the end of classes or certain job commitments — may need to be delayed depending on conditions outside and that families should wait for the all-clear announcement. The presentation included the release phrasing the district uses: “The secure is released. All clear.”
The session closed with the presenter urging families and staff to practice and plan together and thanking community partners for their support in making safety a shared responsibility.
