Springfield Township SD committee advances edits clarifying free charter‑school transportation

Miss Green, a district staff member, said the proposed edits to policies 140 and 810 clarify that Springfield Township SD must provide free transportation to charter‑school students when the charter is located within the district or within a 10‑mile radius.

"We currently do not have any charter schools within our district. We have one charter school that falls within that 10‑mile radius outside of our district and we have four participating students," Miss Green said, adding that those students could "easily merge onto a non‑public school route that we currently have," and that providing service would not add a run to the existing load.

The draft language also notes that transportation for charter schools follows the charter school's calendar rather than the district calendar, a distinction Miss Green said is required by law and practice. Another presenter pointed to minor wording changes in the "purpose" and "transportation" sections to make explicit that charter students must be afforded the opportunity for free transportation even when service need not be identical to routes for traditional public‑school students.

Committee members asked about which charter school was involved; the presenters identified Greenwood Charter School and said it is (to their knowledge) K–12. With no further objections, the committee agreed to move policies 140 and 810 forward as a single reading for approval at the next board meeting.
