The Petaluma City Schools Board of Education approved a contract to appoint Kirsten Grimm as Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, with a May 1 start date. The board cited continuity for instructional leadership, support for LCAP/CPSA work and the need to stabilize curriculum and instructional systems as key reasons for approving an earlier start date.
Kirsten Grimm, introduced to the board and community, described herself as an equity‑centered, data‑driven leader and said she looks forward to partnering with principals and teachers to strengthen instructional systems: "What I am most excited about in this role is to partner with PCS principals, teachers and staff in strengthening instructional systems that lead to inspiring teaching and learning so that every student in every classroom experiences belonging and excellence," she said.
Several trustees acknowledged the benefits of filling the post before the summer, but voiced fiscal concerns. Trustee Joanna Pond said she was "concerned" about timing amid a hiring freeze and asked how the position would be funded for May and June; board and staff described temporary administrative savings from other vacancies and consultant reductions that offset the initial months of the contract.
District staff summarized near‑term savings from backfilled roles and consultant reductions and said those savings, combined with other timing savings, would cover the May–June payroll impact without reducing site services. Trustee Pond and others pressed for continued budget discipline as the district addresses FHRA recommendations.
The motion to approve the contract passed by majority vote.
What happens next: Ms. Grimm will begin onboarding and assume responsibility for LCAP/CPSA alignment and site instructional support. Trustees asked staff to incorporate fiscal monitoring into routine reports to ensure budget impacts are transparent before the start of the next fiscal year.
