Board amends charter contract to limit seats reserved for relatives of charter staff to 10%

The Elkhorn Area School District board voted April 27 to amend a charter contract so that children who are immediate family of charter governance board members or charter employees cannot make up more than 10% of a charter school's total enrollment.
Administrators said DPI asked the district to change the language from a 20% preference cap to 10%. In discussion the board clarified the percentage applies to students related to governance board members or charter employees of a charter school, not to district employees generally. As one board member explained with an example, "If there's 50 kids in the school, you would have seats for no more than five" related students under a 10% cap.
A motion was made and seconded to approve the amendment; the board passed the motion by voice vote. District staff indicated the amendment required a signed contract change and that the revised language aligns with DPI guidance on conflict‑of‑interest and equitable access.
The board recorded no further substantive changes to the contract at the meeting; administrators said the signed amendment would be filed with DPI as required.
