The Grandview Heights City Council on May 11 introduced Ordinance 2026‑12, a proposal to amend the city’s fire prevention code to align local provisions with state administrative code.
Mayor Kearns said the ordinance is largely intended to mirror state standards and that fire department staff will present the recommendations at an upcoming council or committee meeting, currently scheduled for May 26 or June 8. “This is largely to align local code with the state standards,” Kearns said.
City Attorney Cusam explained that the city intends to integrate selected state administrative provisions into the city’s codified ordinances and preserve state‑style numbering for ease of lookup, rather than renumbering sections. The ordinance adds new provisions for subjects such as EV charging stations, which were not previously covered and present new fire‑safety considerations.
Council member Houston asked procedural questions about how state administrative code will be integrated into the codified ordinances; Cusam said the changes will be incorporated into the codified ordinances and that the administration’s fire staff would better explain operational implications when they appear before council.
The ordinance was recorded as a first reading and assigned to the safety committee for further discussion.
What happens next: Fire department staff will present the recommended changes and answer technical questions at a safety committee meeting; council will consider amendments and a second reading in subsequent meetings.
