Wyomissing liaison reports highlight BCTC expansion and Kutztown early-college growth

During liaison reports at the April 27 meeting, the board heard updates on vocational and early-college opportunities that district leaders said will expand student access to postsecondary credits and career pathways.

Mrs. Torres reported on the Berks County Technical Center (BCTC), saying recent planning calls proposed program expansions that would add electrical, HVAC, plumbing/heating, carpentry, veterinary assistance and other certification opportunities without building new facilities. The district representative described a phased program of new teachers and renovations that would add roughly 194 student seats across multiple programs, with some expansions targeted to the 2028–29 school year.

In a separate update the superintendent highlighted the Kutztown University Early College Academy: the program grew from 38 to 68 students completing the program this year, with about 97 students expected to participate next year. The superintendent relayed an announcement that Kutztown University received more than $800,000 in grant funding that will cover credits, tuition, books, fees and transportation for participating students, enabling broader access to college coursework for area high-school students.

Board members said the expansion of BCTC programs and the early-college growth reflect regional collaboration and workforce-development priorities. No formal board action was taken on the liaison reports during the meeting; both items were provided as informational updates and will be followed through standing committees and future meetings as needed.
