Wayne Township students, music staff and long-serving employees honored at April 23 board meeting

The Wayne Township Public School District board used its April 23 meeting to spotlight student musicians, community partners and staff retirees. Leaders thanked Calvary Temple International for hosting district events, celebrated student placements in regional and state music ensembles, and recognized winners and participants from the district’s 18th annual culinary competition.
Music teachers and directors named dozens of students recognized for achievements in North Jersey School Music Association and other honor ensembles. Directors highlighted the Wayne Valley Marching Band’s third consecutive North Jersey Marching Band Director Association Class A State Championship and the Wayne Valley Indoor Percussion Ensemble’s regional gold medal at the U.S. Scholastic Regional circuit.
Teachers and staff were singled out by name for their roles in sustaining the district’s performing arts programs and extracurricular opportunities. On behalf of Anthony Wayne Middle School, Christa Wild said: "Through the years, our district music program has maintained a very high level of performance and recognition." Several directors and coaches took turns describing students’ accomplishments and the role of earlier elementary music instruction in those successes.
The board also read tributes for a long list of retirees, recognizing decades of service from school secretaries, cafeteria employees, custodial and buildings-and-grounds staff, and classroom teachers. Among those honored were Barbara Doster, Debbie Taylor, Nancy Canio, Cynthia Rodano, Roberto Ryell, Kelly Torn, Brian Hinderwong, and Michael Rose. The tributes emphasized each person’s role in student support, community-building, and program continuity.
No policy changes or votes resulted from the recognitions; the board moved on to routine committee reports and other business after the awards and group photo.
The meeting adjourned following final comments and thanks to volunteers and applicants to the Future Ready School advisory committee.
