City says $600,000 state grant will keep Davis respite‑center staff funded for two years

The Davis Social Services Commission was told on April 20 that the city has received about $600,000 in state grant funding to stabilize staffing at its respite center.

Director Bailey said the city applied to the state’s Permanent Local Housing Assistance Program and “we were awarded about $600,000 in activity six,” and that the money will be used for program support, primarily staffing. Bailey said the funds are already in the city’s account and charges against the award will begin July 1.

The grant, Bailey said, is expected to sustain two fully loaded positions at the respite center for about two years. “The positions are term limited, funded for the next two years,” Bailey said. He added that the city will open recruitment for those positions when the funds can be charged.

Commissioners asked whether the award can be used for facilities or other operating needs. Bailey replied the award is intended for program infrastructure and operations and that staffing is the largest line item the city expects to cover.

Staff also told the commission the request for proposals for a new respite‑center operator is paused while the city finalizes a permanent location; until a site is chosen, staff have told applicants to hold. Bailey said current staffing at the respite center is stabilized through June 30 and the PLHAP award will maintain that level thereafter.

The commission did not take a vote on the grant; the briefing was informational. Staff said the city expects to charge the grant beginning July 1 and that other program details, including hiring timelines and position descriptions, will be posted as recruitment opens.
