Olmsted County declared a local disaster on April 17 following tornadoes that struck multiple parts of the county, county officials said at the April 17 board meeting.
County Administrator Travis Gran briefed commissioners on preliminary damage assessments: about 50 homes had sustained damage and roughly 20 were listed as major damage cases. Gran praised the rapid response by the sheriff’s office, public works, public health and numerous volunteers and churches who assisted affected residents. "The sheriff's office response was excellent," Gran said, and he singled out emergency operations personnel for rapid coordination and public‑safety work.
The emergency declaration, approved by the board, authorizes county staff to forward documentation to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and request state support and any available federal assistance for debris removal, emergency public works, and individual assistance programs. Gran said county staff will continue damage assessments and coordinate with municipal, township and state partners to prioritize life‑safety repairs and debris clearance.
The declaration will provide a mechanism to unlock additional resources for cleanup and recovery; county staff urged residents affected by storm damage to report losses to county emergency management to ensure they are captured in damage inventories.
