Superintendent cites high teacher survey response, budget planning and honors students and staff

Superintendent Dr. Breedlove used his April 14 update to highlight staff and student accomplishments and to outline near-term budget and operational work for the district.
Breedlove said that Pender County Schools achieved a 96.72% response rate to the statewide teacher working conditions survey, higher than the statewide rate he cited as 90.5%. He described the district-wide effort to build the 2026–27 budget and noted that the district manages "a $130 million plus budget" annually; he thanked finance staff for a successful audit.
The superintendent reviewed upcoming events (Committee of the Whole April 28; the May 12 regular board meeting; multiple graduation dates in late May) and that the district will follow a four‑day, 10‑hour summer schedule from June 12 to August 7. He also announced that Pender County is again Purple Star certified, placing the county in legacy status for supporting military families.
During the recognitions portion of the meeting, Dominick Bates and others honored Luke Smith as the district's Impact CTE Teacher of the Year and celebrated students who earned spots at North Carolina Governor's School (Vassi Gerassimova and James Wee) and a Morehead‑Cain scholarship recipient (Elizabeth Brinson). District staff recognized several All‑State band auditionees and Ms. Penny Wolf for completing Spark NC leader orientation.
Breedlove also informed the board that former school leader Caroline Godwin had died last week; he and trustees offered condolences and noted her service to Pender County Schools and Wake County.
The superintendent concluded by reminding trustees of reading-challenge milestones (CF Pope students read 285,000 minutes in March) and upcoming district events including Special Olympics on April 24 and Pender County Schools Awards Night on May 4.
