Board approves $60,150 grant-funded propane fueling installation for bus barn

The Taos Municipal Schools Board voted April 22 to approve installation of propane fueling infrastructure at the district transportation bus barn, accepting a presented quote of $60,150 to support two propane buses purchased last year.
Transportation supervisor Samantha Martinez said the project is funded through a New Mexico Public Education Department capital grant to the district. Board discussion noted statewide estimates of annual savings per propane bus of roughly $3,000 to $5,000 and added maintenance and emissions benefits compared with diesel operation.
District staff said the quoted cost covers the propane infrastructure work; the electrical work for pumps/stations is contracted separately and will be presented once specifications and bids for that component are complete.
The board approved the installation by roll-call vote: Board member Koncha, Board member King, Secretary Truhill, Vice President Spray and President Flores voted yes.
Implementation notes: district staff will coordinate final electrical specifications and contractors, apply for available state utility or fleet rebates, and proceed with construction as soon as contracting and approvals are complete.
