Nicole Foy, an 11th-grade student and committee member, told the board the naming committee received 74 responses to its community survey between March 25 and April 7. "Variants of Dan Dan Baron received over half of the submissions," she said, citing 38 mentions (about 51 percent) as the most common community preference.
Superintendent Dr. Leighton explained the committee had provided six candidate names and that the family expressed a preference for the official name form "Dan Dan Baron." Board members discussed memorial options and the committee's outreach, including placing a commemorative plaque inside the facility with a photograph and wording shaped in consultation with the family.
Board members also acknowledged the source of funding that made the facility possible. "We would not have this facility if it was not for Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham's allocation and the family's advocacy," the superintendent said.
After discussion and a motion, the board voted by roll call to approve the committee and family recommendation as the board's selection for the required first reading. The vote was recorded in favor by Board member King, Secretary Truhill, Vice President Spray and President Flores. The naming will return for a second reading and formal adoption at a subsequent meeting.
What happens next: policy requires two readings for formal naming. The board moved the recommendation forward as the first reading and will publish final details and any plaque language for family review before the second reading and adoption.
