Board approves $414,832 playground contract for Horace Mann; several facilities and vendor agreements presented

The Lakewood City School Board approved on May 4 an agreement with DWA Recreation to install new playground equipment and complete playground improvements at Horace Mann Elementary for $414,832.63, the lowest of three bids. Mrs. Clark-Sutton presented the resolution and the board voted on one reading so the vendor could schedule summer work; the roll call showed all members voting in favor.
Clark-Sutton told the board the DWA bid was the low of three proposals (Playground Equipment Services: $472,770; Snyder Recreation: $425,000) and that approving the contract on one reading was intended to speed scheduling and allow the work to be completed before the start of the school year.
The board also reviewed additional facilities and vendor items in the building sites and major purchases section of the agenda. Those included a superintendent-recommended one-year extension with Securitas Security Services USA Inc. to provide six officers for 180 days at Lakewood High School and other district properties for the 2026–27 school year (with an option to renew); continued participation in the Ohio Schools Council cooperative purchasing program for 2026–27 (membership fee described in the agenda materials as $200 per district plus 18 cents per student, equating to about $936.56 for the district); and rental agreements with Horizon Education Centers to host summer youth and before/after-school programs at several elementary buildings.
Why it matters: The Horace Mann playground award commits roughly $415,000 of district funds to capital improvements and affects summer construction scheduling and school opening readiness.
