Several commissioners and county assessment staff addressed large recent changes in assessed values that produced sharply higher property-tax bills for some residents. Officials cited cases in which assessed values for some buildings rose substantially — one example mentioned a pole-confinement building that increased by about $250,000 — and said they are working on a program to reduce assessed values across affected townships.
Speakers discussed the mechanics available to the county: assessment-factor adjustments to bring structure values down and potential county council action to lower local tax rates to offset assessment increases. Officials said Form 11 notices will be prepared and that they prefer to adjust assessed values before sending notices so residents receive corrected comparisons. Commissioners urged collaboration with county council and agreed to pursue a work session to review levy capacity, appeal procedures and the timing of any rate changes.
Next steps: Assessment staff will continue review work, prepare corrected values where appropriate and coordinate with the county council on whether rate changes or other mitigation are warranted before Form 11 notices are finalized.
