Board members and staff discussed replacing broader degree language with explicit requirements: certification in exceptional student education and educational leadership, and a minimum of five years of successful teaching experience with at least three years in ESC compliance or liaison roles. Several members said ESC-specific experience is important because the position oversees IDEA-funded services and must ensure compliance with federal and state requirements.
Staff said many comparable districts list a bachelor's degree and a valid professional Florida certificate in ESC as the minimum; board members weighed that guidance against the desire not to unnecessarily narrow the candidate pool. After discussion, the board directed staff to require ESC certification, leadership credentials and the five-year minimum with three of those years in ESC-related roles.
A motion to accept the updated coordinator of ESC and student services job description with those changes passed on a recorded vote of 5-0. Staff said the revised description will be returned in final form for posting and recruitment.
