Sign advisory council approves several sign plans, imposes lighting limit on relocated sign

The HTC Sign Advisory Council approved a set of routine sign applications during its May 5 meeting, formalizing master sign plans for multi-tenant properties and imposing a lighting restriction on a relocated projecting sign.

The council approved a master sign plan that formalizes previously approved sign locations and limits future unapproved signage for a multi-tenant building at 28 Easy Street. Commissioners discussed whether hanging (projecting) signs or quarterboard signs are preferable for continuity; Commissioner Kevin Kuster expressed reservations about mixing hanging and quarterboard signs but the motion to approve the master sign plan carried after a second with one recorded dissent.

At 14 Federal Street, NIR Retail requested to relocate an approved projecting sign and to add illumination. The council approved the relocation and the lighting on a motion that included two staff conditions: lighting must use bulbs no greater than 15 watts and be illuminated only during the business'0hours. Staff recorded the conditions on the record before the vote.

Other routine master sign plan formalizations and previously approved signs were noted and recorded; the council asked staff to ensure master sign plans are included with applications going forward to prevent confusion about previously authorized sign types and allocations.

Votes and conditions recorded at the meeting will be entered into the municipal sign file and staff will follow up on compliance as the season progresses.
