District outlines preparations for Cognia accreditation review in 2027–28

The Griffin-Spalding County School District on May 5 outlined its multi-year plan to prepare for a Cognia accreditation review expected in 2027–28.

Dr. Tracy Sims told the board that Cognia assesses district systems across three categories—leadership, learning and resources—and is focused on continuous improvement and sustainable practices rather than only compliance. "What makes this difference is they are focusing on continuous improvement. What do we have that is sustainable? ... They are going to be looking at our systems, not our programs," Sims said, advising that the district begin preparations in 2025–26 and ramp up teams and internal processes in 2026–27 ahead of the anticipated 2027–28 on-site review.

Sims described planned work including internal reviews, aligning district artifacts with Cognia rubrics, monthly monitoring, leadership check-ins at all schools and professional learning tied to the standards. She said Cognia's review will include classroom observations and stakeholder interviews including teachers, students, parents and the board. Sims noted that in 2022 the district earned accreditation and that the upcoming review will emphasize demonstrating student learning growth, effective instruction, data-driven decision making and resource alignment.

Board members asked whether all board members would be interviewed; Sims said interviews typically include all members arranged in small groups. She urged district leaders to begin monthly feedback cycles that mimic mini-accreditation reviews so staff and principals are ready when Cognia conducts its on-site review.

What’s next: The district will begin team formation and internal processes in summer 2026 and conduct ongoing monitoring and evidence collection through 2027 in preparation for the formal review period.
