During the board’s call to the public, Molly Johnson told trustees that long-standing district practice has prevented some hourly employees from receiving both a position reclassification and the district-wide 4% raise.
Johnson said the practice has been in effect as long as she has worked for the district (about 13 years) and gave examples of two reclassified positions where the grade increase equates to about $624 and $686.40 per year. She said limiting employees to one increase makes reclassification “nothing more than a title change” and hurts recruitment and retention for low-paid hourly staff.
Johnson asked the board to consider whether the cost savings of denying both increases is worth the effect on staff and noted that reclassification is intended to better align compensation with evolving duties. Board members thanked Johnson for the comment; the board did not take immediate action during the meeting on the request but the topic was on the record for possible future agenda consideration.
