New SFE contractor reports year-one gains, modest ADE findings and plans for an e-truck

John Oakley, area director of regional operations for SFE, gave the board an in-person recap of the contractor’s first year serving Santa Cruz Valley Unified School District and outlined programs the company said boosted participation and student engagement.

Oakley highlighted several value-added efforts: a roving chef program that brings students into food preparation, mascot events and special holiday meals (including an elevated Thanksgiving service). He said the contractor surveyed students, added new offerings (sushi at the high school produced roughly 150 servings per day during the trial), and plans to expand menu items next year to increase participation and revenue.

On compliance, Oakley told the board SFE underwent the Arizona Department of Education administrative review and reported only one technical finding this cycle — a marked improvement compared with prior reviews that produced multiple technical findings. Oakley described the review as intensive but said the team worked to correct issues and that the program demonstrated improved compliance overall.

Oakley previewed an incoming “e-truck,” a mobile service vehicle intended to bring reimbursable meals and snacks directly to students who do not come to the cafeteria. He said the truck has been delayed but is expected next month and that management plans to reinvest any increased revenue into the program. Oakley framed SFE’s objective as “nourishing students, supporting staff, and serving the community.”

Board members asked about striking a balance between healthier options and student preferences; Oakley pointed to nutrition-education classes and said the roving chef and in-school programming are part of that effort. Several board members praised SFE’s outreach and the local team’s engagement with students and staff.

No formal action was taken on the report; board members thanked the team and moved on to other agenda items.
