Santa Cruz Valley Unified board accepts clean FY2024–25 audit

The Santa Cruz Valley Unified School District Governing Board voted April 28 to accept the district’s fiscal year 2024–25 audit after auditors reported a clean opinion and no current material weaknesses.

Heimfeld & Company audit partner Christopher Heimfeld told the board auditors issued “an unmodified or clean opinion this year,” and that the audit showed improvement from prior years: a previous material weakness related to cash and investment balances with the county treasurer has been corrected. Heimfeld also said the district’s most recent administrative review produced only one technical finding rather than the larger set of findings reported in prior cycles.

The vote came after Heimfeld walked the board through required communications, the audit timeline and the annual comprehensive financial report, which the auditor described as a multi-section, more-than-100-page document that includes management’s discussion and analysis, basic financial statements and supplementary information. Heimfeld noted the most significant estimate in the statements was the actuarial assumption tied to the district’s net pension liability and that the audit included non-audit services such as assistance preparing financial statements.

Board members moved and seconded a motion to accept the audit. The board took a roll-call vote: Ms. Alma de la Riva: I; Mr. Rene Ramirez: I; Mr. Ben Guerrero: I; and Ms. Lourdes Vasquez (president): I. The motion passed.

The board did not ask for additional action after accepting the audit; Heimfeld invited board members to contact the firm year-round with any questions. The district will retain the audit report and the related management letters as part of its official records.
