Town Board approves local parking measures across villages, clears administrative calendar

At its April 28 meeting the Town of Hempstead Board closed several public hearings on traffic and parking measures and adopted the proposed local laws. The board approved parking restrictions in Bellmore, expanded parking/standing prohibitions affecting Baldwin, Bellmore, East Atlantic Beach, Island Park and North Bellmore, arterial stop signage in Baldwin and Seaford, and right‑turn‑only restrictions near Island Park. The board also adopted a package adding on‑street handicap parking in specified addresses in Baldwin, Roosevelt and other villages.
Town staff described the safety rationale for each measure. Rob Gabriella of the town’s traffic control unit explained that a no‑stopping zone at the Grand Avenue and Parsonage Street corner in Baldwin addresses sight‑distance concerns raised by residents, and that the handicap parking placements were made at residents’ requests and require validation of a Nassau County placard.
Each public‑hearing item drew at least one public speaker, mostly expressing support or seeking clarification of location and process. The board voted on each item by roll call; votes recorded were unanimous among board members present.
Separately, the board approved the administrative calendar (items 7–43), which included transfers for personnel cost allocations, the disposal of obsolete highway equipment that has been replaced, a modest increase in petty cash for General Services from $200 to $500, acceptance of donated trees for Baldwin Park, and participation with Best Friends Animal Society for shelter programming. The town attorney summarized litigation and personnel items presented on the calendar. The supervisor recused himself from administrative calendar items 33 and 34 and the remainder of the calendar passed on recorded votes.
What this means: Several near‑term traffic and parking changes will be implemented by town staff; details and exact sign locations described in the adopted local laws will be posted in the town file and on the town website. The administrative approvals provide routine housekeeping for equipment and personnel and formalize a number of small capital and contract actions.
