Iron County Commission approves Summer Games funding, amends burn-season ordinance and signs off on routine business

The Iron County Commission used its April 27 meeting to approve several formal actions: a three-year $300,000 MOU for the Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games, adoption of Ordinance 2026-9 amending county burn-season dates, local consent for two single-event permits at Wood Ranch, the annual fraud risk assessment for 2025 and multiple personnel and tax-exemption items.
Funding and events: Deputy Attorney Sam Woodall explained the TRCCA advisory board recommended $300,000 to the Utah Summer Games, to be paid in three $100,000 installments over three years; the commission approved the MOU (motion Michael Bleak; second Kenneth Robinson; votes: Bleak Aye; Robinson Aye; Cozzens Absent). Jon Oglesby, USG director, had presented a preview of the event schedule and economic impact earlier in the meeting.
Ordinance: The commission approved Ordinance 2026-9 to amend Iron County Code §§8.04.100 and 8.04.101 so that closed and open burning seasons align with recent statutory changes and updated clearing-index thresholds; the ordinance also retains other code provisions and misdemeanor penalties for violations. Sam Woodall said the item had been postponed at a prior meeting for notice issues; the commission moved and approved the ordinance (motion Michael Bleak; second Kenneth Robinson).
Permits and audits: Randy Clark of Cedar City Elks Lodge requested local consent for alcohol at two Wood Ranch events (June 20 and Aug. 8); the commission approved the single-event permits. Auditor Luke Little presented the required 2025 fraud risk assessment and said Kimball & Roberts, CPA will perform an external audit beginning May 11; the commission approved the assessment.
Other business: The Board of Equalization considered eight property tax exemptions recommended by Deputy Auditor McKayla Meinhardt and the commission approved exemptions for the 2026 tax year. HR Director Jennifer Bradbury presented multiple hires to fill vacant positions; those personnel actions were approved. The meeting also included routine approvals of minutes and claims for payment.
All motions recorded in the minutes were moved by Commissioner Michael Bleak and seconded by Commissioner Kenneth Robinson unless otherwise noted; voting records are noted in the minutes for each item.
