Residents and landowners offer mixed views on proposed wind farms; commission to consider adding comments to record

A batch of public suggestion cards received by the county produced sharply different written views on proposed wind development near the Kismet area, and commissioners directed staff to add the materials to the administrative record for full consideration.

The clerk read comments from landowners and residents that alternately urged the county to allow wind turbines on private land as a source of revenue and school funding, and warned that wind projects would harm long-term ecological or property interests. Examples read into the record included a card from Laura Ball arguing that landowners should be allowed to place windmills on private farms "at our discretion" and that the county and school district would benefit financially. Another card, from Nancy Nance, urged caution and defended families who had committed land to conservation (CRP) and opposed the proposed change.

County staff told commissioners they had contacted the party that handles record-keeping and noted that if only some commissioners had received phone calls or other outreach, adding a supplemental package to the official record would ensure all five commissioners have the same information before taking any action. The commission directed staff to place the supplemental information on the next agenda so the group can consider it formally.

No formal zoning or regulatory decision was made at the meeting; the exchange was limited to receipt of public comment and a procedural decision to add material to the record for future deliberation.
