Facing recruitment shortfalls, the Seward County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 2 approved an interim starting wage of $18 an hour for equipment operators in the landfill, road-and-bridge and waste-haul departments until the pending wage-resolution returns to the board.
County staff told commissioners they were short several workers in the landfill and had lost candidates for road-and-bridge positions while waiting for finalized wages. “We are, as of this month, four people short in the landfill,” a staff member said during the meeting. Commissioners moved to apply an $18 hourly starting rate for the listed positions and the motion passed 5-0.
The pay change is temporary pending the formal resolution the commission intends to consider in the coming weeks. Commissioners indicated they would not change wages without further commission action beyond this interim measure. The action is intended to allow hiring to proceed while staff and the commission complete the formal wage-resolution process.
