Residents urge Seward County to pause large-scale wind projects, citing health, wildlife and road concerns

Several Seward County residents used the March 2 public-comment period to urge commissioners to impose at least a temporary moratorium on large-scale wind development near homes and sensitive areas.
Kathy Fitzgerald of rural Seward County said turbines are “hundreds of feet tall,” create decades-long changes to landscapes and disproportionately benefit a few landowners while neighbors shoulder noise, lights, shadow flicker and possible drops in property values. “I’m asking the commission to at least adopt a temporary moratorium on large wind projects in Seward County,” she said, asking the board to use the pause to review setbacks, road-use agreements, irrigation and decommissioning standards.
Raul Kismet also pressed the commission to study potential health and environmental impacts, including infrasound, livestock and wildlife effects, and fire risks during extreme weather. He suggested greater setbacks near parks and cities and said some communities consider a countywide vote on such projects. Both speakers asked the commission to preserve local decision-making authority rather than yield permitting to outside companies or state pressure.
Commissioners did not vote on wind policy at this meeting; public comments were submitted for consideration. Commissioners acknowledged the concerns and signaled the topic will require additional study and community input before any formal action.
