Health foundation donates $24,000 for AEDs; district recognizes nurses and student teams

Iredell-Statesville Schools announced a $24,000 grant from the Heart of Health Foundation at its May 11 meeting to help the district acquire 16 new AEDs (automated external defibrillators). Superintendent and presenters said the new units include pediatric capability and longer‑lasting lithium battery systems, improving emergency preparedness across the district’s schools.
Miles Atkins, executive director of the Heart of Health Foundation, thanked district lead staff and partners for identifying the need and working on the gift. The superintendent said the upgraded AEDs will enhance preparedness for roughly 10,000 students and 1,000 staff and that vendor discounts helped procure a larger set of units.
The board also recognized the district’s 21 school nurses, noting that nurses conducted more than 46,000 student and staff visits this school year, made 55 911 calls, administered hundreds of daily medications and completed thousands of vision screenings. Lead nurse Gina Caldwell and other nurses were acknowledged for their daily service to students.
Finally, the board celebrated student achievements in Odyssey of the Mind, district robotics and SkillsUSA competitions, naming teams and individual award winners and thanking coaches and faculty sponsors.
