Ellsworth County commissioners approve abatements, LEPP grant payment and architect invoice; Midway Extension told to wait for sales bond

The Ellsworth County Board of Commissioners approved a set of financial actions and discussed space for Midway Extension District during a March 9 meeting at the Ellsworth County Courthouse.
Chairman Gregory C. Bender called the meeting to order at 9 a.m. and the board unanimously approved the agenda and the minutes from its March 2 meeting. The board then considered requests from county departments and outside groups.
Nathan Florian, the county EMS director, requested a new credit card to be kept in a new ambulance and asked that EMScredit-card limits be set at $5,000. Commissioner Shawn Thomas moved to issue one additional EMS credit card and set the department's total credit-card limit at $5,000; Commissioner Dennis L. Rolfs seconded the motion and it passed 3-0.
The commission held two brief executive sessions. The board entered a closed session with the EMS director and the county's emergency management director from 9:06 to 9:16 a.m. to discuss non-elected personnel health matters, and later met in executive session with County Clerk Shelly D. Vopat from 9:47 to 9:57 a.m. to discuss non-elected personnel leave time; the minutes record that the board returned to open session after each and took no action.
Representatives from Midway Extension District, Craig Dinkel and Jessica Kootz, asked for an update on the district's office space. The commissioners told them construction on a new space cannot begin until legislation authorizing the proposed sales bond is passed and that Midway will not be able to occupy its current space in the interim. "Midway Extension is willing to be split up into different areas of the Courthouse," said Jessica Kootz, a Midway representative; the board said it would continue to explore alternatives.
On fiscal matters, Commissioner Thomas moved to approve abatements numbered 2025-84 through 2025-97, totaling $25,675.80, reflecting new affordable-housing classifications; the motion passed 3-0. The board tabled the appointment of the Carneiro Township treasurer until the commission receives a written request for appointment.
Commissioner Thomas also moved to approve payment of $8,300 to applicant #8 from LEPP grant funds to assist with a septic system; Commissioner Gregory C. Bender seconded and the motion passed 3-0. Later, the board approved a $10,090 invoice from the Goldberg Group Architect to be paid from the General Fund, again by a 3-0 vote.
The meeting adjourned at 10:31 a.m.
The board did not record any additional follow-up deadlines or set a date for the next meeting in the minutes provided.
