Board hears Special Olympics, youth biking and ribbon-cutting plans

Leslie Young summarized the Special Olympics spring games at A.C. Reynolds High School, saying opening ceremonies will be at 9:30 a.m. and competitions begin at 10 a.m.; staff encouraged attendance on May 21 and estimated about 330 athletes and roughly 700 volunteers for the day. “It’s a pretty awesome day for everybody,” she said, inviting board members and residents to attend.
On youth biking, staff said the department ordered roughly eight bikes (possibly 10) intended primarily for children ages 8–12, plus two additional instructor bikes. Programming will expand into youth mountain-biking countywide once policies and procedures (including first-aid and CPR requirements for instructors) are finalized.
The department also announced a June 12 ribbon-cutting at Owen County Sports Park and additional community engagement for a forthcoming Park development. Staff asked for volunteer support at county events and connected an online participant, Emily Tracy, with the program assistant to coordinate help for a market event.
Next steps: staff will finalize bike quantities and program policies, publicize Special Olympics and ribbon-cutting details, and coordinate volunteers for upcoming events.
