Weatherford council approves architect amendment and construction contract for administrative office renovation

The Weatherford City Council on May 12 approved two items to advance an administrative office renovation: an amendment to the architect's contract and authorization for preliminary construction work.
Jacob Kirkpatrick, director of parks, recreation, special events and facilities, told the council staff identified a need for added space and expanded design services. He said the amendment with Elements of Architecture covers geotechnical, structural engineering and expanded mechanical, electrical and plumbing design and carries an additional fee of $29,950, producing a cited aggregate amendment amount of $225,950 for the fiscal year.
Kirkpatrick described the physical fix: shifting a footprint outward by about 30 feet to address termite damage and rot in an existing exterior wall and adding roughly 2,500 square feet to provide a flexible training room, offices and public restrooms. On capacity, he said the training room could hold "probably fit 70 chairs" in a theater-style layout or about 40 people with tables, depending on setup.
Separately, the council authorized the city manager to execute a construction contract with DRI Construction for immediate preliminary work including demolition of interior non-load-bearing walls, plumbing and HVAC replacement and exterior wall replacement. Kirkpatrick said the immediate contract request was for $98,515.15 with an overall fiscal-year expenditure amount referenced in staff materials as $953,627; staff said roof repairs from prior hail are covered by insurance and the city has funds set aside in a building fund for these projects.
Council members asked whether permitting would be an issue for the parks portion; staff said permitting was likely required only for that portion. Both items were moved, seconded and approved by voice vote at the meeting.
The council's actions advance design completion and early construction steps; staff offered an estimated timeline that included design completion in July, general construction starting in August and an estimated move-in date in January subject to the standard permitting and contracting processes.
