At the Marysville City Council meeting an American Lung Association project manager described an Earth Day cleanup at Ellis Lake on April 1 that collected eight bags of trash — including a notable quantity of tobacco litter — and involved partners such as Say Love, Yuba County Health & Human Services and the Blue Zones Project.
"We did have youth engagement. We had 4 students come out and we did give them certificates of completion for 1 hour of community service," the presenter said, and later described photos showing cigarette butts and debris found in the lake and surrounding areas. The speaker said volunteers used large gloves to collect tobacco waste and estimated several full gloves of cigarette butts.
Council members thanked the volunteers and commended public works for cleanup efforts. The finance director and other staff noted that weather complicated collection on the rainy, windy day but praised the outreach and youth engagement. The council record shows the presentation concluded with a request to continue community partnerships around litter reduction and education.
