Ellsworth County approves Hutton bid to remodel courthouse, use sheriff garage bay

Ellsworth County commissioners voted Feb. 9 to move forward with a bid from Hutton to remodel the county courthouse and renovate space for the sheriff’s office.
Sydney Goldberg of Goldberg Group Architects, joining by telephone, told the board she had a "good conversation" with Hutton and said Hutton proposed using an empty bay in the sheriff’s garage rather than renting a trailer to reduce project costs. Commissioner Shawn Thomas moved to accept Hutton’s bid; Commissioner Gregory C. Bender seconded the motion and it carried 3-0.
The commissioners did not discuss detailed dollar amounts for the Hutton work during the meeting, nor did they set a project timeline in the minutes. County staff mentioned coordination with the Register of Deeds office as part of courthouse space planning; Extension District #15 representatives later raised separate concerns about available courthouse office space.
The board also approved a separate request that staff continue to coordinate with involved offices to explore options so that departments, including Extension, can remain in or near the courthouse. No formal timeline or contract signature date was recorded in the minutes.
The board adjourned at 11:54 a.m.; follow-up on the remodel and internal office moves is to be handled by county staff and the architectural team.
