Highway staff report steady salt deliveries, maintenance progress and staff vacancies; county to post spring bids

Department staff told the Dodge County Highway Committee on March 10 that salt orders from state and county sources are arriving at a better pace (over half of the year’s quantities received and fitting in existing sheds). Crews have used bucket trucks to remove large trees along state and county roads, completed guardrail and cable barrier repairs, started intersection sweeping and have begun tar‑and‑chip and mastic patching as improved weather permits. Staff are preparing the Juneau salt sheds for ClearSpan work expected to start at the end of March.
On staffing, the committee heard there are two open highway maintenance technician positions and one welder vacancy; two interviews for the maintenance technician openings were scheduled for the next day. On projects, Nathan Kempke said the county expects to post road projects for bid on March 17 with a bid opening on April 7, covering roughly 18.4 miles of new asphalt. A separate state‑led concrete package covering 6.1 miles on CTH A was previously awarded to Michels.
Financially, the highway financial manager reported balance‑sheet numbers declined as year‑end 2025 expenses were applied but the department remains in the black overall and still has funds in its snow/ice account. Committee members approved carry‑forward amounts for projects begun in 2025, including truck builds, road construction, bridges and small structures.
