Board hears student‑safety memo; forms safety committee to prioritize low‑cost measures

Tyson presented a student‑safety memo summarizing practices from the Ohio School Safety Summit and other national sources. He recommended a two‑track approach: implement low‑cost or no‑cost actions immediately (for example, routinely locking classroom doors during class, window film and better communication with law enforcement) and convene a safety committee to evaluate higher‑cost options (stop‑the‑bleed kits, door barricades and other physical investments).
“I’m in no way saying that this is going to happen here — I’m merely saying that let’s make it really hard for this,” Tyson told the board as he urged proactive planning and communication between educators and law enforcement.
Board members directed staff to begin implementing the low‑cost measures and to assemble a safety committee that includes law enforcement, administrators and community stakeholders to produce prioritized recommendations that balance cost and effectiveness.
Superintendent remarks later in the meeting confirmed administrators will move forward on immediate items while the committee finalizes its work.
