Glen Ridge council appoints Akaya Armstrong and Joseph Schuster; Shade Tree plan approved, 53 trees to be planted

The Glen Ridge Borough Council unanimously approved two midyear municipal appointments and highlighted recent progress for the borough’s Shade Tree program.
Councilmember Moody moved and the council approved Resolution 88-25 appointing Akaya F. Armstrong to the Shade Tree Commission for a term ending Dec. 31, 2027. The council also approved Resolution 89-25 appointing Joseph Schuster as a second alternate to the Glen Ridge Planning Board through Dec. 31, 2026.
The council celebrated a planning milestone for the Shade Tree Commission: the commission’s community forest management plan was approved by the state. Council members said the plan is posted on the commission’s page and reported that 53 trees are currently being planted boroughwide as part of that work.
Why it matters: The appointments fill vacancies created by a recent death of a longtime volunteer and keep the commission and planning board at functional staffing levels; the newly approved forest plan provides the borough a long-range roadmap for tree care and planting.
Other local updates: townwide tax revaluation inspections have begun and a water meter replacement project is underway (officials said each meter swap takes under 30 minutes and residents will be contacted to schedule inspections).
