Gonzales Library to Reopen in New Community Center; Grand Opening Feb. 28

Christopher Gallegos, community librarian with Monterey County Free Libraries, announced the Gonzales branch grand reopening during the county news briefing and described the library’s relocation to the Dennis and Janice Capraa Community Center.

Gallegos said the grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 28, with festivities from 10 a.m. to noon followed by regular service hours. The site houses three main components: the library proper, a classroom called the teen innovation center and a teen lounge. The library will partner with the city of Gonzales and other local organizations, and the facility is adjacent to Gonzales High School, a middle school and an elementary school.

Planned programming includes a 3D-printing demonstration for teens, a pen-style filament 3D activity, family-focused toddler activities, story time, a weekly tech-help slot and a continuing calendar of events. Gallegos noted existing partners such as the Boys & Girls Club and community nonprofits; Save the Whales (a Seaside-based nonprofit) will present marine conservation programming at the reopening.

Gallegos described Gonzales as a small, rural community (about 10,000 residents) and said the new location brings library services closer to schoolchildren and neighborhood residents who previously had to cross an overpass to reach the old branch. After the grand opening, the branch will operate on its regular schedule and the county library system plans expanded programming throughout the year.

Next steps: grand opening event Feb. 28 (10 a.m.–noon); library to begin regular service thereafter and continue coordinated programming with city partners.
