Staff emphasized that listing on the study list does not itself designate the property as a local landmark; a completed local nomination is required for designation.
Commissioners discussed the property’s diminished architectural integrity — including loss of original windows and other fabric — but several members said the building’s religious and cultural significance and its role in community history justified study. One commissioner noted that being on the study list could help property owners pursue grant funding for rehabilitation, particularly for sacred spaces.
A motion to add the property to the study list passed unanimously. Staff said the next steps would include instructions from the commission on how to proceed with a formal local landmark nomination if the property meets minimum requirements.
