Monterey County to Unveil COVID Memorial Garden at March Board Meeting

Supervisor Luis Alejo (District 1) said Monterey County will unveil a COVID memorial garden during the Board of Supervisors meeting on March 10, a public ceremony intended to honor residents who died during the pandemic and the frontline workers who served their communities.
Alejo told the county news briefing that he filed a referral for the memorial in February 2021 and later authored a board resolution establishing the first Monday of every March as a day of remembrance. He said the memorial recognizes about 940 victims and also honors healthcare workers, teachers, farmworkers and other essential employees who served during the crisis.
Alejo said the county raised most of the project funds from individual donors and local businesses and described the memorial as a place for families to gather and for future generations to remember the pandemic’s toll. He said the installation sits at the county government center near the main building and courthouse and that at least three family members have agreed to speak at the March 10 ceremony.
The county will publish an online form before the unveiling for family members to submit names to be included in the memorial and to nominate frontline workers to be honored, Alejo said. The ceremony will occur during the board’s morning session and continue into the lunch hour.
Next steps: the county will make the online submission form available and host the March 10 unveiling; no formal board vote or ordinance was reported during the briefing.
