Cemetery manager outlines new gate access system; board questions plaque location

“Once that device is installed we will be able to give the city green light,” Rano said, adding that the main gate will remain open during daylight and secondary gates will be closed and manually opened by staff each morning. Rano said the system will allow entry for the fire department in case of emergency and that the gate design change (from a swing to a sliding gate) informed the location chosen for a commemorative plaque.
Board members raised concerns about the plaque’s current placement, saying it is partly obscured by the gate when open. One board member said, “That’s a poor place to put,” and recommended mounting a visible sign on a post inside the cemetery so visitors would see it when entering or exiting. Rano said relocating the plaque to the concrete pillar would require additional reconstruction and cost, but staff could explore a pole-mounted sign as a lower-cost alternative and would return with cost estimates.
The board also discussed minor repairs and sign visibility, and asked staff to provide cost figures for moving the plaque or installing an additional post-mounted sign. The gate-access device remains the operational step needed before the secondary gates are kept closed after hours.
