Hamlet recognizes dispatchers and first responders after lifesaving response for a wounded toddler

Council held a recognition ceremony honoring dispatchers and first responders for their response to an Aug. 30, 2024, incident in which a 2-year-old child was shot in the leg.
Council’s statement named communications staff Cassidy Patterson and supervisor Garrett McKinnis for directing responders and advising bystanders; Captain Norris and first responders and EMTs were credited with immediate on-scene care, rapid transport to the police station and subsequent transfer to a trauma center. A physician who treated the child later told the city that the team’s actions not only saved the child’s life but also preserved the child’s leg.
During the ceremony Chief Trey Goodwin and Emergency Management Director Bob Smith joined council in recognizing the team. Councilmembers and the mayor praised the professionalism of the city’s emergency personnel and called the response “heroic.”
Next steps: Council formally presented awards and the mayor and council asked staff to continue supporting emergency operations and to relay the city’s appreciation to the named employees.
