Local health update: Corrales official flags New Mexico plague case, rising COVID positivity and ongoing measles cases

At the village council meeting Aug. 26, Tanya delivered a public-health briefing that covered several active infectious-disease issues affecting New Mexico and the nation.
Tanya reported that a 43-year-old Valencia County resident was confirmed this week with plague, which is transmitted by fleas or contact with infected animals, and advised residents to reduce flea habitat around homes, consult veterinarians about flea-control products, and avoid contact with wild rodents. "So clean up wood around your house...put hay in compost piles away from your home," she said.
On COVID-19, Tanya said national test positivity rose to about 9.9% (up from 8.5% the prior week) and that emergency-room visits for COVID increased slightly; hospital admission rates in New Mexico remained low (about 1 per 100,000 over the prior seven days). She cautioned that wastewater surveillance data were temporarily unavailable because of technical issues.
Tanya also briefed the council on measles, reporting roughly 100 measles cases in New Mexico and 1,375 confirmed U.S. cases as of Aug. 19; she noted that measles incubation can be up to 40 days and further cases remain possible. She encouraged appropriate timing for influenza and updated COVID vaccination, noting the value of timing shots for stronger immunity.
Councilors asked timing and vaccine-supply questions; Tanya replied that adult COVID vaccines had full authorizations and that manufacturers were preparing updated seasonal formulations.
The briefing was informational; the council did not take health-policy action at the meeting but the report was recorded for public notice.
