Board moves to place overnight archery trip approval on next agenda amid transport and insurance questions

The Millersburg Area School District board agreed to place approval of an overnight archery trip scheduled for May 6–9 on the next meeting agenda after administrators outlined transportation challenges and insurance requirements. Administrators said the trip will involve multiple round trips to Kentucky to accommodate students competing in archery and track events.

Why it matters: Board members pressed for safeguards because of the long drives and multiple trips; securing insurance coverage and authorizing specific drivers were presented as conditions before the district would sign off on van rentals.

Administrators told the board the plan being considered is to rent two vans and authorize specific coaches to drive them, contingent on running drivers’ histories. "If we approve the rental of the vans and we run the driver history and authorize, you know, certain people to drive the vans then it would be covered under our insurance," the administrator Jonathan said. The board discussed adding two adults per van for safety; one member said, "For safety, we need to have at least two adults in every van that are eligible to drive."

The district does not yet have the names of the coaches who would be authorized; Jonathan said those would be provided and checked before the vote. Administrators also said the archery club intends to pay for the rentals, though the board heard that the district might need to front the cost and be reimbursed or the club could pay directly. "The club will pay for this however it needs to work out," Jonathan said.

What happens next: The board scheduled the item for a future meeting where officials expect to present driver names, insurance confirmation and final cost arrangements for formal approval.
