The Muscular Dystrophy Association on May 11 told the Atwater City Council it will return to the city for a 'Fill the Boot' firefighter fundraising campaign aimed at supporting research, care centers and family services.
Christina Mota, who said she covers the MDA’s Northern Region in California, told the council the program has a long history: “Fill a boot has been around for 75 years,” she said, noting a longstanding partnership with the International Association of Fire Fighters. Mota said funds raised support groundbreaking research, critical care and services for families living with neuromuscular diseases.
Mota gave council members a local overview of MDA services in California, saying the organization supports 22 care centers in the state and runs camps and peer‑support programs. She noted recent investments of about $200,000 in a study called Champions Insight to collect firefighter health data and help research possible links between firefighting exposures and conditions such as ALS.
The MDA representative described practical logistics for the fundraiser — signage, truck banners, boot wraps with QR codes for digital donations, and insurance coverage for participating firefighters — and said only a small share of proceeds (about 5%) goes to operations. She encouraged council members and residents to support the event and named Angie Connell as a contact for follow‑up information.
The council thanked Mota for the presentation and acknowledged the group's partnership with local fire departments. No action was required; the presentation was informational.
