Beloit board approves repeatable two-year school calendars for 2026–27 and 2027–28

The School District of Beloit board on April 7 approved district calendars for 2026–27 and 2027–28 after a presentation by Dr. Leah Gordon Mallett and Director Jeff Stunrus.
Administrators said they designed a two-year, repeatable calendar to meet Department of Public Instruction (DPI) instructional-minute requirements, provide transition (soft-start) days for entering grades, preserve a two-week winter break, and create an extra late‑April day as a buffer for inclement-weather makeups. Staff noted middle-school bell times and contracted Durham transportation schedules constrain start and end times; those routing constraints shaped the overall district start/stop pattern.
Trustees asked how the calendars affect mixed-grade high-school classes and graduation timing. Several members expressed concern that seniors’ last day (as proposed) could precede the end of some other students’ instructional days, creating logistical issues for teachers with mixed-grade rosters. Administrators said high school schedules could be adjusted but doing so may create inequitable contract days for staff; they also said a limited number of districts were reviewed as models for mixed-class handling and some use underclassmen exams or make-up structures.
Motion by Brian Nichols, seconded by Carol Fox, carried unanimously. The adopted calendars will be posted to district channels for community planning and administrators will return with clarifying operational guidance for mixed classes and graduation-day expectations.
