A Schilling Elementary teacher on Wednesday asked the Newark Unified School District board to support a low-water, native-plant 'Miwok' micro-forest on campus that would replace a water-intensive lawn area and create an on-site outdoor classroom.
Science teacher Nilan Patil, who said he has raised $5,500 toward the project, described the micro-forest method as a dense native planting that becomes largely self-sustaining after an establishment period. "This is a solution that children and youth and the community can get behind," Patil told the board, noting the project's potential to reduce maintenance costs and provide regular outdoor STEM learning opportunities.
What staff and presenters proposed: Patil and site leaders suggested planting strips or a linear buffer near Thornton Boulevard to provide shade and a nature barrier, and described curriculum materials for growth-tracking and biodiversity observations. Staff said a public planting day and ceremonial blessing by Indigenous partners are planned, and that the district will track potential water and maintenance savings.
Funding and next steps: Patil reported $5,500 raised and an additional commitment of $5,000 from partner funders next year; the project team will continue community fundraising and return with a site plan and installation schedule for board approval.
