Students spotlight choir, band and Esports; team cites state qualifiers and sponsorship

Student representatives and program leaders updated the board on extracurricular activities at the Nov. 14 meeting.
Music students described recent events including a homecoming halftime performance, fall choir concerts and a Veterans Day program that included a guest speaker and a 21-gun salute by a local VFW post. Student officers also highlighted upcoming events: an indoor marching concert and holiday concerts open to the community.
Nate Selby and the Esports student captains outlined the program's expansion since it began in 2023, reporting multiple state qualifiers across games such as Fortnite, Rocket League, Minecraft and Mario Kart. Selby said the program fields varsity and junior varsity squads across seasons, works with sponsors (CTC provided support and an invitation to present to the NTCA rural broadband conference) and has produced the district's first Esports scholarship offer to a student.
"Esports are engaging, challenging, team-oriented and competitive sports using video games to enable participants to gain the same valuable on-the-field life lessons as traditional sports," Selby said, describing the program's mission and extracurricular benefits. Students described competition results, season formats and streaming/social-media roles that support broadcasting and marketing.
Board members praised the students and staff for program growth and community engagement. The superintendent noted Flyer Fest fundraising success and commended the Esports team's earlier in-district pitch that helped secure initial investments.
