Board hears Long Meadow roof low bid and approves solar plans for the school

At its May 20 meeting, the Regional School District 15 Board received a facilities update on Long Meadow Elementary School and approved final plans and cost estimates to advance a solar installation at the same building.

Facilities staff (speaker 8) told the board that roofing bids closed May 6 and the apparent low bidder is Superior Roofing with a bid of about $1,400,000; staff said that earlier cost estimates were near $1.9 million and that the next low bid was roughly $1.7 million. Staff explained that the district’s debt-service encumbrance was just under $1.4 million and that, if the low bid is validated, the district could avoid using reserve funds for the roof. Staff also noted the state reimbursement process — described in the meeting as roughly a 50% return for eligible costs — which would materially lower the district’s net exposure.

On a separate item of regular business, the board moved, seconded and approved a resolution authorizing the final plans and cost estimates for a solar installation at Long Meadow Elementary and directing staff to submit required documents for the state process. Staff described the solar package as a separate bid and said the project’s total gross cost was about $750,000; after state adjustments the figure cited in discussion for district exposure was about $350,000. The board approved the resolution by voice vote.
